The NY Times article “What Are Friends For? Power and Pain” by ALESSANDRA STANLEY is an interesting read. What I whole heartedly agree with is that in the world of Gossip Girl “16 is the new 30.” Unfortunately, I hadn’t had the opportunity to read the “Gossip Girl” books. So When I began to watch the television series, it was mind bending! Most social events include cocktails; the drink of choice seemed to be a variety of martinis. What was most mind boggling, however, is that the teens never even needed a fake I.D. to order at the bar! Does this really happen in certain social circles? How real are the situations presented in “Gossip Girl?” Is 16 really the new 30?

As surprising as this may sound… yes, this is normal in some circles! Fake id’s are not needed for hedge fund kids, which is known fact in most of the world. As in European, I was astonished to read commentaries of surprise coming from American viewers. In Europe, underage drinking and clubbing is a problem which is acknowledged. It is common to see teenagers starting at 14 years old partying it out in the posh nightclubs (in NYC, LA, and Miami)… Gossip Girl was spot on to notice the growing problem! It would have been unrealistic to watch billionaire characters drinking diet coke… after middle school !
