Entering in my pre-medical undergraduate study at the University of California several years ago, I quickly learned that geek was definitely the new chic in the college world. It was no longer about who had the nicest clothes, electronics, or who kept up with the latest celebrity gossip or clothing trend as in high school. It was all about who had the best study techniques to ace our upcoming exams and who could name all the steps in Glycolysis or the Krebs cycle. I quickly learned my freshman year of college that these “people” or so called “geeks” had to become my new best friends if I was going to survive as pre-med student.
Some people I met in college were very similar to the characters in the WB sitcom The Big Bang Theory. Some were a bit socially awkward like Sheldon and his roommate Leonard and others were extremely confidently but extremely intelligent as well. The Big Bang Theory is another one of Warner Bros’ sitcoms that I definitely can relate to. The show features several central characters that are scientists, physicists, and biology graduate students. The Big Bang Theory originally aired on CBS on September 23,2010 and is now onto its 5th season. The show hilariously contrasts these extremely smart scientists who are a bit socially awkward to the attractive, aspiring blonde actress, and more socially apt character Penny.
In the dating scene and back in my high school days, people with “beautiful minds” were often outcasts and overlooked. In a place where all the people in the environment are somewhat gifted and talented and extremely intelligent such as the campus of University of California, people who were once outcasts and called “the geeks” were able to shine and come into their own light. People with “beautiful minds” are definitely the new chic and the ones who are going to be able to afford all the Prada, Gucci, Chanel, and Armani.
To help the characters “game” in the show, I think that they just need to gain more confidence and believe that they can date who ever they want and know that they are the valuable ones because of their “beautiful minds”.
