United We Stand–The 9/11 NYFW Tributes.
A decade ago the world was struck with the 9/11 tragedy that we will never forget. In the midst of this anniversary, fashion designers paid tribute to the victims of September 11th.
This past Sunday marked the tenth anniversary of the unforgettable tragedy, but the shows went on. Fashion weeks top designers of the day paid respect to all who lost family, friends and co-workers. On his way to the fashion tents, designer Oscar de la Renta recounted his personal experience watching the 9/11 narrate re-unfold.
“I was in tears. But I say this country is about the rebirth all over again. It’s like the phoenix bird reborn from its ashes.”
Many designers found other ways to give back by donating to charities that support the initiative to grow and learn from the devastation. Designer Donna Karen supported the Action America, an organization working to unite Americans to rally in support of 9/11 recovery.
In her show notes Donna remarked, “ We remember the courage, the inspiration, the compassion. How we came together reaffirming our strength to the world.”
Donna Karen paid respect to New York by putting a large yellow taxi backdrop on the runway at her DKNY show. Donna also had several looks that were red, white and blue.
Besides the flock of top designers that filled the front rows of her show, Diane Von Furstenberg debuted an appropriately named collection called, “the Beginning”. As is customary in her fashion shows, Diane walked the runway solo; but this time to Nina Simones “Feeling Good”. The designer waved a handful of American Flags, which were also handed out to guests at the show.
