In 2010, during the 58th Miss USA competition, there was a lot of controversy and celebration when the first Arab American was crowned Miss USA 2010. Many said it was a mark of diversity for America. Ms Rima Fakih symbolically represented America’s acceptance of culture and Muslim religion.
Some Muslims, however, saw this contestant’s beauty and participation as an exploitation and means of corruption by American culture. Some of Rima Fakih’s clothing in the pageant, such as the bikini and strapless gown were frowned upon by strict Muslim and was deemed controversial and racy.
After much negative publicity that was uncovered in her first few months as Miss USA, Rima Fakih hit many headlines, generated much profit, and survived her reigning year as Miss USA 2010 relatively unscathed.
Unfortunately, Ms. Rima Fakih is making headlines again. Early morning Saturday, December 3, 2011, Fakih was arrested in Michigan for suspicion of driving while under the influence.
Fakih’s attorney Donald Elder told the Detriot Free Press, “Fakih is taking full responsibility for her actions.” Adding, Fakih is “very saddened and very apologetic for the situation that she is in right now.”
