Having lived in New York City now for 6 months, I’ve noticed a shift in my vision when roaming through the streets. When I first arrived, my gaze was fixed high upon the skyscrapers that make up the infamous skyline, but my focus has now shifted a bit lower to one of the most telling and essential aspects of a woman’s wardrobe: the shoe.
At the moment, the shoe of choice to protect our feet from the elements in style is none other than our good friend, the boot. But this winter, it seems that the ankle boot, or bootie, is the frontrunner, even more so than the popular knee-high boot. As a New Yorker, I’ve witnessed practically every color, pattern, and heel height imaginable from sleek, 6-inch booties to bold, zebra printed flats. The rise of the ankle boot may have been bolstered by the recent lack of snow in the city, but it is undeniable that this trend is one of versatility that is here to stay for the coming spring months.
For a casual day, a suede or leather option with a smaller, stacked heel (anywhere from .5″ to 3″) is ideal. Black and light beige are common colors for suede booties. However, those who are looking to make a bolder statement may prefer colors like red or blue, or even an animal printed calf hair boot. For leather, women seem to opt for either black or tan. This style of boot is commonly worn with skinny jeans, leggings, jeggings, or tights. For springtime, ankle boots can also be paired with a skirt or dress for a boho edge.
